How to Make Scented Candles at Home
The Best Scented Candles For 2023

Alexander McQueen
Ghost Flower Candle, £295
Alexander McQueen recently launched a brand new line of candles, made up of three signature scents: Ghost Flower, Pagan Rose and Savage Bloom. Each scent has been created by a different perfumer, who were given an open brief to reinterpret the McQueen codes.
Of the three, it’s Ghost Flower that has caught our eye (or at least, our nose) – think floral notes of fresh freesia and peony with an underlying wave of patchouli. Each candle in the collection has been crafted using a combination of black mineral waxes and rapeseed wax, and are housed in an egg-shaped black lacquered glass with a silver, dark or gold metal lid. Very snazzy.

Helm London
Peppercorn & Raspberry Candle, £29
Helm is best known for its eco-conscious candles, which are hand-poured by artisans in the UK and made using soy wax, essential oils and cotton wicks. Our pick is the Peppercorn & Raspberry candle, a fruity scent layered with sweet and savoury notes as well as an undercurrent of florals, berries and peppercorns.

Carrière Frères
Acacia, £60
Acacia Refills, £40
A quick whiff of this candle will fill your senses with sweet and floral notes, underscored by a honey-like fragrance. Perfect for summer.
This fragrance is also part of Carrière Frères’s refill range, meaning you can continue to use the original glass container from your first candle and fill it up with its vegetable wax refill (for a fraction of the cost).

Discothèque
Upstairs, £45
A vibrant and smokey scent to recreate the feel of soft pink lipstick shimmering through raindrops, a hint of freesia in the air, the faint scent of clove and the fresh wet pavement. Violet leaf, white rose and peach blend with freesia and lily before smouldering in a clove, tobacco and cinnamon base.

Dior
La Collection Privée Saint-Honoré, £80
La Collection Privée Christian Dior Dioriviera Collection gives you a mini trip to the French Riviera without having to leave the house. The Eden-Roc candle is the perfect summer scent for your home, if you can bear to take it out of its chic blue and white case, that is.

Jo Malone & Richard Quinn
Design Edition Candle Duo – The Fruity Floral Pair, £110
Two of our favourite home fragrances, (Peony & Blush Suede and English Pear & Freesia) are housed in a stunning limited edition box designed by the brilliant Richard Quinn. The perfect gift…to me, from me.

Buccellati
Violet & Musk Murano Candle, £175
Italian brand Buccellati is best known for its fine jewellery, but it also offers an exquisite candle collection along with silver candle holders. Our top pick is the Opera base made with mauve Murano glass containing the violet and musk scented candle.

Acqua di Parma
Luce di Colonia, from £60
This unmistakeably Italian candle features fresh notes of citrus, followed by floral undertones and woody base notes. Think orange and lemon, as well as patchouli, neroli and vetiver. A fresh scent that will liven up any room.

The White Company
Spring Medium Botanical Candle, £32
Spring is (nearly) here, which means cosying up by the fire with a good book. The best accompaniment? The White Company’s spring botanical candle, which features notes of honeysuckle, rose and cut grass.

Aromatherapy Associates
De-Stress Candle, £50
For the first time Aromatherapy Associates has released a collection of its most loved blends as candles. De-Stress, Deep Relax, Rose and Revive are all made from 100 per cent natural vegan soy wax, with the equivalent of up to two bottle of essential oil packed into each pot.

Jo Malone London
Pastel Macaroons Townhouse Candle, £96
Inspired by six classic scents and moments in a British townhouse (such as the iconic Jo Malone London townhouse), this new collection of scented candles include ‘glowing embers’ and ‘green tomato vine’. But for something really indulgent, opt for the Pastel Macaroons fragrance for a sugary warm almond aroma that is (almost) good enough to eat. The stunning new ceramic casing will look beautiful in your home office or on your dressing table, too.

LOEWE
Tomato Leaves Candle, from £78
Featuring eleven plant essence-based scents including beetroot, oregano and bright tomato leaves, the Spanish label’s new home fragrance range is as diverse and bountiful as the vegetable gardens that inspired them. Creative Director Jonathan Anderson sought to evoke the smells of his childhood, crafting scents that are ‘part Victorian botanical garden, part apothecary’. All come in delightfully tactile, colourful terracotta pots – based on a 5th century Greek mug – with beautifully illustrated packaging.

Soak Sunday
Rose Utopia Rose & Sea Salt Scented Candle, £21
Aromas of blossoming rose, oceanic sea salt and geranium combine in this pretty pink candle from Soak Sunday.

Evermore London
KANA x Evermore Light Candle, £150
Brand-new from sustainable brand Evermore in collaboration with ceramicist Kana London, this limited edition ceramic outdoor candle offers up to 200-hours of burn time – more than enough to last you through a summer of balmy evenings spent entertaining al fresco. Let notes of bergamot, grapefruit, rosewood and cedar fill your home and garden. The best part? You can put the candle vessel to good use once the wax has run out; Evermore recommends transforming it into a debonair serving dish.

Roja
Neroli de Tunise Candle, £295
Nobody does fragrance quite like Roja, and this Neroli de Tunise Candle really is exquisite. The flowers of the bitter orange tree are hand-picked to create the citrus-floral Neroli oil used in the candle, that will add an instant feel of luxury to your home.

Daylesford Organic
Botanical Lavender Candle, £16
The sealable lids on these gorgeous Daylesford candles makes them perfect for travelling with. This relaxing lavender scent is a great addition to your pre-bedtime routine. Just be sure to blow it out before you drop off…

Victoria Cator
